Art II-
Today the Art II students finished their Design Projects.
Here are several creative projects.

Sorry, Cody, that your mask is sideways!

After our design projects we started working on our line drawings of tropical plans. It is much more difficult to draw from real life as oppose to an image, but 2nd period is doing a great job. This is one of the plants were as using for our model. The next two photos show two examples of students' work.

Today in Art II we finished up our mystery line drawing. When all the pieces were removed a lovely line drawing of a magnolia blossom and leaves was revealed. Both Art I and Art II are working on logo design for a county-wide contest. The challenge is to create a logo for CCS energy management.
Art I finished up their design project. Here are a few of the designs they created using only 3 pieces of paper, a glue stick and a pair of scissors.

In Art I today we started our design projects. This project limits students to only 5 simple materials (3 sheets of paper, a glue stick, and a pair of scissors).
materials the students were given

Using only these limited resources, students must create an interesting design. You would be surprised what they create.

Here are just a couple examples.

In Art II today we worked on a drawing that tests students ability to draw what they see. This is a great way to begin the semester because it forces students to make their brain, hand, and eyes work together. Only one section of the images is revealed at a time. Students can only draw what they see in that section. This can be a challenging and rewarding exercise for young artists.

First Day of Second Semester

A new semester, new students, new art supplies- it is all so exciting! I just love a brand new sketchbook or a set of fresh colored pencils; they hold some much possibility!

Today we introduced ourselves. Drew our hands. And read over the first of our monthly Art Newsletters. Please sign the newsletter. A signed newsletter = a free homework pass! Included in the newsletter is information about my webpage and class blog. Please visit them both on a regular basis.

On Monday I will be sending out information about the fieldtrips that we have planned for this semester.

If at any point this semester you have questions or concerns, please contact me through phone, email or in person. My contact information is on both my website and the second page of the Art Newsletter.

Painted Pinch Pot Critters

Well, this is my final post for the semester. It has been a good one. Exams start tomorrow. I will be re-posting on the first day of second semester. But I wanted to give you one last set of pictures. Our pinch pot critters have been painted, and they are too cute not to share!

Pinch pot critters lined up ready to be painted!Let the painting begin!

On the first day of class, students were asked to create a drawing of their hand holding an object. They were told that at the end of the semester we would do the exact same assignment. The purpose of re0drawing the hand holding an object 90 days later is to show the student growth from day 1 to day 90. Below are two examples of the growth students showed in their drawing ability. I am so proud of how much they learned!

Today we are going to be drawing the human body in correct proportions. This is not easy so we are going to start by drawing the body with simple geometric shapes.

Our self-portraits are progressing. Yesterday we practiced creating a skin-tone value scale. Then we started working on the areas of flesh in our self-portraits. It is not easy but the students are working hard to make their drawings look realistic.

Here are a few more self-portraits.

The process of creating a self-portrait

How create an accurate self-portrait:
Step One: Take a photo of yourself, print it off, and then draw a 1/2" by 1/2" grid over the photograph.

Step Two: Grid a plain white sheet of paper with a 1/2" by 1/2" grid.
Step Three: Using the grid, create a line drawing of yourself. Then erase the grid-lines.
Step Four: Using color pencils, shade the drawing.
Here are three student examples of self-portraits in the process of being drawn.
